Colin Alexander Henry Binks

Colin*(1) was born April 12, 1818 in Hare Street, Woolwich, Kent and christened at Saint Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, Kent, on May 22, 1818. He married Eliza Sajant*(2) (born April 30, 1812 in Woolwich*(3)), at St Nicholas Church, Deptford on September 6th 1840. Eliza was the daughter of William Sajant, a Miller.

*(1) 'Collin' is the name variation that was used on his Marriage certificate and in some other later sources.
*
(2) Variants of this name appear in sources: Sageant, Sajeant, Sajient. However, Colin & Eliza's marriage certificate clearly show 'Sajant' and their last known child was registered as Eliza Sajant Binks. Presuming this is what Colin and Eliza believed the spelling to be, and for consistency, I will use the 'Sajant' variation throughout this web site except when quoting sources, or when a descendant's child has been given the name but with an alternate spelling.
*(3) Most sources: Woolwich but 1851 England census states St Luke's (Middlesex)

According to Eliza Sajant's obituary*(4) in the Perth Courier (newspaper), the family emigrated to Canada in 1857.

Colin's brother James also emigrated, though it's not clear if they made the same voyage. The following notices of convictions and fines appeared in the Perth Courier as indicated:

Perth Courier, January 13, 1860

Return of Convictions for the quarter ending December 31, 1859
Drunk and Disorderly
James Binks and Colin Binks, five shillings each

Perth Courier, Sept. 21, 1860

Return of Convictions for the quarter ending September 30, 1860
Drunk and Disorderly
James Binks, One Pound

Colin's family were living in Perth, Ontario, Canada, in the County of Lanark at the time of the 1871 census and Colin's occupation is given as a cabinet maker.

Perth Courier, August 21, 1885

Binks—Died, at his residence on Monday, 17th August, Colin A. Binks.

Elsewhere in the same newspaper:  A well known resident of this town, Colin Binks, died Monday morning at the advanced age of 67 years.  He was born at Woolwich, near London, England and came to Perth from there 27 years ago

Mr. William Fitzsimmons, late of the Perth Expositor, and now of the Ottawa Free Press, was in town attending the funeral of his grandfather Colin Binks.  Mr. William Binks* and Mr. James Binks* of the Parliamentary Printing Office and both graduates of the Courier office were in town this week also attending the funeral of the late Colin Binks.

* William Binks = William Joseph Binks (Colin's son) and James Binks = James Joseph Binks (son of Colin's brother. James John Binks). William Joseph Binks and James Joseph Binks were cousins and evidently had worked together.

Colin died on August 17, 1885 and was buried at Old Methodist St. Paul's, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, Canada. His wife, Eliza, died on October 23, 1891 and is buried at the same church yard.

*(4) Eliza's obituary (Perth Courier - Oct. 30, 1891):
