James Binks

James was born in Pentridge (now Coburg), Victoria, Australia on September 18, 1859.

On the 1st April 1884 in Moor Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, he married Mary Elizabeth Evans. Mary was the daughter of George Evans and Ellen Heffinan* and had been born on January 15, 1864 in Brunswick, Victoria. She was recorded as a 21 year old Assistant on her marriage certificate though she was really aged 20. Her mother signed as one of the witnesses.

Mary Elizabeth Evans
Birth Registration: Her birth was recorded in Feb 1864 as 'Elizabeth Evans' and an authorised alteration on the
5th September 1864 (7 months later) changed it to 'Mary Elizabeth Evans'.

The EVANS/MERTON family bible entry. (entered into the bible after 1867) records her
as 'Elizabeth Evans'.

She signed her name as Elizabeth EVANS. She really was aged 20.

She signed the "1891 Women's Suffrage Petition" as M E BINKS of Whitby Street, Brunswick.

She is listed as Elizabeth on her mother's death certificate and as Mary Elizabeth on her father's
death certificate.

James was both a labourer and a fishmonger. He used to hawk his fish, from a horse and cart, around the Box Hill area of Melbourne. Mary has been described as 'a little, tubby lady'.

James and Mary Elizabeth lived in Dorking Road, Box Hill, Victoria.
