Joseph Binks

Joseph is our earliest known Binks ancestor who, in view of his first child's confirmed birth date, must have been born around or before 1760. We know that his wife's name was Sarah and that they lived in the Woolwich area and had at least 7 children.

According to the I.G.I., a marriage took place on February 2, 1778 at Saint Peter's Church, Leeds, Yorkshire, between a Joseph Binks and a Sarah Wright. Though I can't prove that this is 'Our' Joseph & Sarah, I think it is extremely likely for the following reasons:

1) Our Joseph & Sarah gave at least 2 of their children the 'Wright' middle name. It was not unusual for a middle name to be the mother's maiden name.

2) Joseph & Sarah's first child was Sarah Binks who was born on June 18, 1779. This fits in pretty well with the marriage date of Joseph Binks & Sarah Wright.

3) During my searches through the Woolwich St. Mary Magdalene church records, I could find no evidence of a Binks family before our Joseph and Sarah in that area. This suggests that they didn't actually come from Woolwich. The BINKS name was and is still more common in the north of England and it makes perfect sense that Joseph and Sarah may have moved south to Woolwich.

If Joseph Binks and Sarah Wright migrated south to Woolwich, Kent and were the ancestors of all the Binks families on this website, we can be sure that our entire Binks family had its roots in the North of England and probably Yorkshire.

Nothing more is known about Joseph Binks.
