Joseph Manasseh Binks

Joseph Manasseh Binks was born at Thomas Street, Woolwich, Kent on February 21, 1830 and Christened at Saint Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on March 21st, 1830.

Like his father he was a cabinet maker and appears to have moved into the Shoreditch area of London by his early 20s.

He was living at 15 Curtain Road, Shoreditch at the time of his marriage to Easter Nessie Sargant (born in Connaught, Ireland in 1835). They married at St. Leonard's Church, Shoreditch on December 4, 1853 and had at least nine children.

A note exists among memorabilia owned by Joseph's daughter, Easter Clara Josephina, which reads: "The children of Joseph M. Binks were separated and scattered when he was threatened with Debtors Prison. He co-signed a note for a friend and had to sell all of his possessions to pay the debt including his wood working tools. He was a master craftsman and carved beautiful furniture."

Joseph and his family were living at 37 Alex Road, Richmond, Surrey at the time of the 1881 census. He was 'unemployed' at the time.

In the 1891 census, he can be found living at 134 Albert Road, Peckham with his daughter, Catherine Amy Binks.

Shortly before his death, he was working as a Joiner at 2 Manaton Road, Peckham.

Joseph died on October 6, 1902 at Southwark Infirmary after suffering from Chronic Tuberculosis. His wife, Easter, had died on June 9, 1884 at Middlesex Lunatic Asylum, Banstead from Chronic Brain Disease.
