Joseph Rutland

Joseph Rutland was born January 20, 1903, (source: birth certificate) and it is not yet clear why his birthday was always celebrated on 18th January. He was born at 8 Shacklewell Street, Bethnal Green, London, and worked as a French Polisher. Joseph (known as 'Joe') married Mary Ellen Barnett (born March 17, 1904) on July 10, 1924 at the Register office, Shoreditch.

During the Second World War, Joseph served in the Royal Air Force Police.

Joseph & Mary had 2 children; Mary Joan Rutland* (my Mother) and Janice Marie Rutland (Sallie).

As grand parents to 7 children, Joseph and Mary inherited affectionate nicknames within my family. Joseph was known as 'Poppa', and Mary as 'Nanny Olsh'. The origin of the name 'Nanny Olsh' is not clear, but probably evolved from an earlier name of 'Nanny Ouch!' (The expression she may have used after being hurt by one of us children!)

Joseph died at home (94 Wells Avenue, Prittlewell, Southend-On-Sea, Essex) on February 1, 1993.

Mary Ellen died on June 16, 1996 at "Broadoaks", 2 Southend Road, Rochford, Essex.
