Joseph and Eliza had at least 5 known children. At the time of the birth of his son Joseph William Rutland (Jun) in 1851, he was a 'Labourer'. The 1861 census and the marriage certificate of Joseph William Rutland (Jun) - dated February 1, 1869, indicate that he was (by then) a 'Calico Bleacher'.

Joseph died in Camberwell bet. January - March 1870

After Joseph's death, his family can be found in the 1871 census living at 4 George street, Peckham (part of Old Kent Road) with what appears to be his son Charles Thomas Rutland, daughters Clara, & Eliza and also a possible 3rd daughter, Caroline Rutland. This MAY be our family, but only by seeing Caroline’s birth certificate can this be proved. There is a mystery as to why the head of the family is a widowed MARY Rutland (aged 50).  If this is our family, the mother should be Eliza Jane (COOK) Rutland.  Maybe Eliza had died sometime earlier and Joseph William Rutland re-married to this Mary. The research continues.
