Sources (eg. census records, baptism records - see above) indicate that George Samuel Guttridge worked as a Labourer, but for a period in the late 1840's until at least 1851, he was Verger at St Mark's Church. The building dating from 1846-1847, is situated at 114 Hamilton Terrace, St John's Wood, London NW8 9UT. Presumeably, the building was being used even before its completion as the earliest reference to George's occupation as 'Verger' is in his son Alfred's baptism record dated September 14, 1845. This should not be confused with the 'other' St Mark's Church, situated in Marylebone Road, which was constructed in 1871/1872 - by which time, according to the 1871 census, George was once again working as a labourer.

The 1841 Census finds Mary Ann and her surviving children William John, and Emily living at (No 5*) Randall Place, Roan Street, Greenwich. Mary Ann's husband George Samuel Guttridge is not present, and at the time of writing has not been located in the 1840 Census.
*Note that this was the address where Henry Huskisson (Mary Ann's brother) was residing when his wife Catherine was admitted to the Kent County Lunatic Asylum (at Barming Heath, East Barming, Maidstone, Kent) on 21st June, 1842. (See the original admisson register here).

The 1851 Census finds George Samuel Guttridge (occupation 'Beadle and Verger of St Mark's'), Mary Ann (occupation 'Laundress'), and their children: Emily, Alfred, Hannah and Edwin, living at 44 Cochrane Terrace, Marylebone. William John is absent, though no evidence of his death has been located.

The 1861 Census finds George Samuel Guttridge (occupation 'Labourer'), Mary Ann, and their daughter Hannah (occupation 'Servant') living at 48 Henry Street, St John's Wood, Marylebone.

The 1871 Census finds George Samuel Guttridge (occupation 'Labourer'), and Mary Ann ('blind 4 yrs') living at 9 John Street, St John's Wood Terrace, Marylebone.
