We know from Richard's children's baptism records
that Richard's wife's name was Ann, and that he worked as a 'Rope Spinner' or
'Rope Maker'.
The children were born between the years 1817-1827 and logically, one would expect the date of Richard and Ann's marriage to be no more than a couple of years before 1817. Unfortunately no marriage record has yet been found.
In the 1841 census, Edwin Frederick Barney (Richard and Ann's last
child - born 1827) is found living with a John and Ann Harding. John is aged
bet. 65-69, and Ann is aged bet. 50-54. A little research turns up the following
details of a marriage between two widowed
people, John Harding and Ann Barney.

Since Richard's son Edwin was born in 1827, and his wife Ann re-married in 1834, it's clear that Richard must have died sometime between 1827-1834. Again, unfortunately, no death/burial record has been located.
A further complication exists in that due to both Richard and Ann's relatively mature ages at the time of the birth of their first child (Susannah) in 1817 (Richard approx 35 years old, and Ann bet.26-30), it's not possible to rule out the possibility that one or both of them had previously married. Richard and Ann's marriage record, if it can be located, would indicate whether either of them were widowed. If true in Ann's case, John Harding would have been her third husband.
